Five arrests have been made and more police action has been promised following a spate of shootings in Sheffield.

Yesterday, officers arrested a 30-year-old man over the shooting of a 12-year-old boy on the Arbourthorne estate on Sunday afternoon.

The youngster was hit by a bullet in his thigh when a gun was fired from a passing car at 3.45pm.

He was an innocent bystander caught up in a feud between two warring gangs believed to be responsible for a number of shootings on the city estate over recent months.

The man arrested over the lastest incident is being held on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Officers also arrested a man yesterday over a shooting in Meersbrook on Friday, January 10.

The 30-year-old is being held on suspicion of attempted murder following reports of shots being fired in Northcote Avenue.

Earlier this week a man was arrested and charged over another shooting last Friday after a gun was fired at the Kettle Black bar on Ecclesall Road.

Luca Premi, 24, of Treswell Crescent, Hillsborough, has been charged with assault and possession of a bladed article and an imitation firearm.

On Monday, two arrests were made over a shooting on Staniforth Road, Darnall, on Saturday, January 4.

A 28-year-old man was shot in his upper body during a confrontation with the occupants of two cars which pulled up alongside him as he walked along the street.A 22-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, both from Darnall, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The man has since been bailed and the teenager remained in police custody yesterday.Assistant Chief Constable Tim Forber, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “This is just the beginning of a range of activity planned in the coming days and weeks to locate and apprehend those involved in serious firearms offences in Sheffield.“I know incidents like this can be incredibly frightening and upsetting and that is at the forefront of our minds as we continue our investigations.”
