Officers swooped yesterday to disrupt criminality in Arbourthorne and Manor after a drive-by shooting in which a boy, 12, was injured last Sunday afternoon.

The youngster was shot as he was stood with friends on Northern Avenue, Arbourthorne, at around 3.45pm.

Police believe he was an innocent bystander caught up in a feud between two rival gangs and that he was mistakenly shot while the intended target was in the area.

In addition to two suspects, aged 30 and 25, being arrested on suspicion of murder, police arrested four people yesterday on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs after a vehicle was stopped and searched by officers.Nine arrests were also made during patrols of Arbourthorne, Manor Park, Heeley and Gleadless, with suspects held on suspicion of a range of offences including possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, possession of offensive weapons and burglary.The were arrested by officers using stop and search powers and 14 cars were also searched during the crime crackdown.Schools and businesses in the Arbourthorne area were visited by officers by officers yesterday to discuss how to report concerns and any incidents they may have witnessed.Assistant Chief Constable Tim Forber said: “At the beginning of the week we made a commitment to the community in Arbourthorne, who have been deeply affected by recent incidents, to take their concerns seriously and take action.“Since then, we have deployed extra officers, including our Serious Violent Crime Taskforce on the streets of Arbourthorne, the Manor and Heeley to carry out large-scale disruption activity. This has resulted in a number of significant arrests linked to drugs and weapons offences.“I hope that people are reassured by our continued presence and by the extensive enforcement activity that our specialist officers have been leading.“I would like to reiterate my comments earlier this week, that we can only solve this by working with the community. We have seen some incredible support from local people and I want this to continue over the coming months.”
