Police issue Bonfire Night plea to parents after spate of firework attacks in Sheffield

Police officers are pleading with parents to take responsibility for their children tonight following a spate of firework attacks in Sheffield.

Last weekend fireworks were hurled at police officers in Grimesthorpe, Firth Park and Burngreave.

In one incident condemned by police chiefs, a lit firework was thrown into a police car in the city.

Last year, over the Halloween and Bonfire Night period, 17 police officers were assaulted, with 15 suffering injuries in attacks.

Steve Kent, chairman of the South Yorkshire branch of the Police Federation, said: “As these cases highlight, the individuals who do this are putting officers as well as members of the public at significant risk.

“Please know what your children are doing over these coming evenings.

“We are in lockdown and therefore they should not be out on the streets without good reason anyway and it goes without saying they shouldn’t be messing with fireworks.

“It is a danger to themselves, the public and our officers and our colleagues in other emergency services.

“Our officers are hard working and are people who have families at home. They don’t deserve this kind of appalling behaviour towards them.”

Police patrols will be stepped up tonight across South Yorkshire, with Bonfire Night traditionally one of the busiest of the year for emergency services.

Over recent weeks, hundreds of calls have been received by South Yorkshire Police about the misuse of fireworks.

Last weekend a flat was set alight in an attack in Batemoor and swans were pelted with fireworks in Frecheville.
