Police investigation launched after woman is sexually assaulted on Sheffield bus

Police are investigation an incident where a woman was sexually assaulted as she boarded the number 86 bus in the early hours of Saturday morning (February 29).

The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was boarding the bus at 5.10am in Chapeltown when a man who ‘had been watching her for some time’ ran up behind her and groped her.

The bus driver intervened and shouted at the man, who then allegedly pushed onto the bus and started hitting the screen where the driver was sat.

The man then reportedly got off the bus and threatened the driver again, challenging him to a fight.

The driver then shut the doors and drove off with the victim on board, calling the police and waiting with her until they arrived.

The bus driver, told The Star: “The woman was getting on the bus and the man came up behind her. She has told me that he had been watching her for some time while she was at the bus stop.

“He grabbed her so hard and she was crying. It was disgusting behaviour.

“I am glad I was there to help. You don’t know what could have happened if she had been on her own.”

The woman has since been in touch with the driver to thank him for his actions.

A statement from South Yorkshire Police said: “An investigation is underway after a reported sexual assault in the Chapeltown area.

“Shortly after 5.15am, police received reports that a woman had been sexually assaulted while getting on a bus in Lound Side.”
