TRAINS were pelted with stones as they travelled through Chesterfield, police have revealed.

In one of the incidents, on a stretch of track between Barrow Hill and New Whittington, a train had a window smashed. The attacks were committed between 4.30pm and 8pm on Sunday, April 15.

PC Ewan Brechin, of British Transport Police, said: “Both drivers of the trains reported seeing three white youths in dark clothing at the side of the tracks prior to the incident.

“This was an extremely foolish and dangerous act, which resulted in a train being damaged.

“Throwing stones at fast-moving trains is an incredibly irresponsible thing to do and we have stepped up patrols in the area to try and catch those responsible for this crime.”
