Ram raiders are being hunted by police after a terrifying attack on a South Yorkshire bank.

They struck at HSBC’s Wickersley branch in Rotherham yesterday morning in a raid which shocked local residents and bystanders.

South Yorkshire Police said the raiders pulled up outside the bank at the Tanyard Shopping Centre in a white Nissan Quashqai and repeatedly reversed into the window at the front until the glass fell out on to the street.

Three of the men – who police said did not appear to be armed – then ran into the shop and stole money from a cash machine.

A fourth man – the getaway driver – then drove the robbers away from the bank before dumping the car on Black Carr Road, Wickersley.

Nobody in, or near, the bank was hurt during the robbery.

Glyn Ryles, who witnesses police activity around the bank after the raid, said: “I am extremely shocked that an incident of this kind has happened in Wickersley – and at 9.15am when many of the shops had just opened to customers.

“I am glad, but also quite amazed that nobody was hurt.

“The parade has quite a few shops and can get very busy quite quickly in the morning.

“When I arrived, only the area around the bank was cordoned off, with a number of police vehicles, police officers and CSI on the scene.”
