A police spokesperson said they were called to Greaves Lane, Stannington at 9:18am on Monday (6 July) after receiving reports a blue Citroen C3 had collided with a Vauxhall Merviva, which was being driven by a Hermes courier.

The driver and a passenger of the Citroen fled the scene before police arrived.

“We asked the gentlemen driving what had happened and they started beeping the horn and swearing, driving off and accelerating round the corner. A delivery driver was coming the other way and the car ploughed into the delivery driver.”

The witness said the men then ran off, leaving the Hermes courier in his car.

They added: “It’s lucky it was a car, if a pedestrian had been coming round the corner there is little doubt they would have killed them.”

A Hermes spokesperson said the courier “has a slight graze but thankfully is OK.” The company said other drivers have “kindly offered to deliver any parcels on his behalf” and delivery delays are not expected.

Writing on Facebook, a man who said he was friends with the courier claimed the Citreon was stolen.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson added: “Enquiries are on-going. Any witnesses to the collision are asked to call 101 quoting incident number 206 of 6 July 2020.”
