Police find body believed to be that of missing Barnsley man

Officers searching for missing 72-year-old Barnsley man Derek Atkinson have found a body this afternoon.

South Yorkshire Police tweeted at 6.56pm that the body was discovered on open land between Belle Green Lane, Cudworth, and Engine Lane.

Formal identification has not yet taken place but the body is believed to be that of Derek, who was reported missing from Barnsley yesterday afternoon after he left Grange Lane, Cundy Cross at about 2.40pm.

Derek was last seen at 12.15am this morning, on Silverstone Avenue, Cudworth, walking in the direction of Oulton Drive.

The police said his family have already been informed and the death is not being treated as suspicious.

"Thank you to everyone who shared our appeals and who assisted with searches," they said.
