Officers have been targeting crooks who are siphoning off fuel from parked vehicles in the area during the night.

Their suspicions were raised when they spotted two men standing beside a 4X4 which was foreign-registered but right-hand drive on the A61 in Tankersley, Barnsley.

When an officer turned around to speak to them they had ‘disappeared into the night’, leaving the car unlocked.

A quick search revealed the empty drums with a ‘very strong smell of diesel’, and the car was also found to have false plates.

"In the interest of calling it a draw though, we thought we would keep hold of their vehicle and diesel drums.”
