The woman has not yet been identified. A post mortem examination to determine how she died was due to take place yesterday afternoon.

Police were called to the property mid afternoon on Tuesday and immediately sealed off the house.

The street was also cordoned off while officers searched the house and carried out door-to-door inquiries.

One resident said: “As soon as the tape went up, and the ambulance came but didn’t leave with anybody we knew it was bad.

“I asked the police if my kids were safe and they said ‘yes’, because it seems to be a ‘behind closed doors’ matter.

“It’s very close to home. I know it happens but you don’t expect it on your own door step.

“You think you know your neighbours but then something like this happens.”

Another resident said the occupants had not lived at the property long.

“The family haven’t been there that long - only a couple of months. When I got home yesterday it was all taped off and the police were there. Obviously it’s not very nice at all,” she said.

“My son saw the first man get arrested and then he saw two kids coming out of the house. They were crying - they were absolutely crying their eyes out.”

A third resident added: “I’m very upset. I’ve lived here for 14 years and this is the first time that anything like this has happened.

“I want to put my house up for sale, sell it and move away.

“The lady had kids. It’s very bad news and I’m very shaken.”

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 507 of March 4.
