Chelsea Mitchell, aged 31, of Victoria Street, Broomhall, Sheffield, had been spotted by police arguing with another woman at Castle Street, Sheffield, according to a Sheffield Magistrates’ Court hearing.

Mark Hughes, prosecuting, told the hearing on August 10 a police officer had approached a lot of people congregating near the Haymarket before they moved away.

Mr Hughes added: “One of these people was Chelsea Mitchell who was arguing with another female and the argument was said to have got heated.”

A police officer was told Mitchell had a knife, according to Mr Hughes, and when the defendant was told she would be searched she took out a lock knife from her jacket.

Mitchell told police the knife belonged to her partner and she had found and did not want anyone else to pick it up because she knew people had died from knife crime.

Mitchell, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in public after the incident on Castle Street, on January 20. She also admitted failing to comply with a previously imposed community order.

David Lawson, defending, said: “The knife was never used and was not produced and it was in a locked position when it was discovered by police.”

Mr Lawson added Mitchell has suffered with alcohol and homelessness.

District Judge Naomi Redhouse sentenced Mitchell to a 12-month community order with a rehabilitation requirement and a four-week curfew. She must pay £85 costs and a £90 victim surcharge.
