Police called to reported handgun sighting in Sheffield

Police spent more than an hour searching a Sheffield street this evening after a reported sighting of a firearm.

A member of the public contacted South Yorkshire Police to report a handgun had been spotted in Chippinghouse Road, Nether Edge, near Abbeydale Road.

The force confirmed that officers conducted an extensive search of the area but nothing was found.

It is not known whether the report was a legitimate sighting, a hoax or a false alarm.

Police have since left the scene.
