The incident took place at 10pm after the special constables responded to reports of cars being ‘driven antisocially’ on Whaley Road in Barnsley. The cars were allegedly being raced up and down the business park.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “While the officers were speaking to one driver about speeding, it’s said that a large crowd surrounded their police vehicle. A brick was thrown which resulted in the rear window of the police car being smashed.”

No injuries were reported and enquiries are ongoing to identify and trace the vehicles in attendance.

Barnsley Chief Inspector Julie Mitchell said: “This was an intimidating incident for the two officers involved, and has now resulted in an operational police car being taken off the road to be repaired, meaning we now have one less vehicle to respond to members of the public when they need us.

“We are working hard to tackle antisocial and nuisance vehicles across South Yorkshire. Gatherings like this pose a risk to the safety of both the drivers in attendance and other road users and I would encourage anyone with any information about those involved to contact police.”

Last week it was revealed there has been 98 attacks on South Yorkshire police officers in the past seven weeks, compared to 71 in the same period last year.

Anyone with information about the incident should call 101, quoting incident number 958 of 26 July.
