Police arrest wanted man in Sheffield after dramatic chase

Abbeydale Road in Sheffield is cordoned off after police arrested a wanted man following a dramatic car chase that started in Derbyshire.

The man, 21, was pursued by officers until he crashed the vehicle he was driving outside the pharmacy on Abbeydale Road at around 4.30pm.

South Yorkshire Police said that the vehicle was a black Ford Mondeo which was stolen in Derbyshire.

Officers engaged in a pursuit of the vehicle as it travelled towards Sheffield on the A621 Sheffield Road. They followed the vehicle until it reached Abbeydale Road and where it was involved in the collision with a car owned by a member of the public.

The driver of the car and two passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.

The wanted man was arrested on suspicion of two counts of burglary, three counts of robbery, failing to stop and two counts of dangerous driving.

Police officers at the scene told The Star that the man crashed into a taxi, a police car and the pharmacy before he was arrested and taken into custody.

Witnesses say that the road was busy with pedestrians at the time of the crash. One said that they saw ‘four or five’ police cars chasing the vehicle before they forced it off the road.

One said that the pursued driver was ‘driving like a madman‘ and ‘could easily have killed someone’.

Abbeydale Road is now cordoned off from The Broadfield Pub.

An investigation is underway and anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 326 of 22 July.
