A total of 73 alleged breaches were made on day one of the new rules.

Superintendent Paul McCurry, who is leading South Yorkshire Police’s operational response to Covid-19, said: “Tackling Covid-19 is a collective effort and the majority of people continue to play their part.

“Police are now however taking a stronger stance against those who are knowingly breaching the regulations which are in place to protect us all.

“We review all reports received from the public, and address any areas of concern as well as those who are blatantly or persistently breaking the rules.

“We will always seek to engage with the public and encourage compliance in the first instance, but where it is a clear-cut breach, or people do not listen to our officers, we will move to enforcement.

“We want to avoid a further rise in cases; we want to protect people; and we want to play out part in preventing South Yorkshire potentially moving to further restrictions under Tier 3.”
