NEWS IN BRIEF: sleeping man saved from flat fire

A MAN asleep in his flat was woken by the shop owner in the business below when he spotted smoke.

The shop owner dialled 999 before running upstairs to alert the 49-year-old man upstairs, who was asleep on the sofa in his lounge.

Firefighters called out to deal with the incident on Main Road, Darnall, at 11am on Tuesday, said a washing machine had caught fire.

An arson attack was responsible for a motorbike going up in flames on Windy House Lane, Manor, Sheffield, at 6.30am yesterday.

ONE lane of The Parkway in Sheffield was closed when a silver Ford Focus ran out control and landed on its roof. Police said the driver escaped without serious injuries in the crash on the outbound carriageway at around 6am yesterday. The road was closed for 10 minutes while the vehicle was moved.

A POLICE probe is underway into a brawl on Bolsover Road, Firth Park, Sheffield. A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said: “Officers are currently following lines of enquiry to deal with criminal damage caused, there have been no arrests made at this stage.” The brawl was on Tuesday night.

TWO sheds on neighbouring roads were broken into - on Thirlwell Road, Heeley, Sheffield, and on Meersbrook Park Road, Meersbrook - on Thursday last week. A garage on Backmoor Crescent, Norton, was broken into overnight the previous evening.

AN INVESTIGATION is underway into the cause of a fire which broke out in the bedroom of a house on Doncaster Road, East Dene, Rotherham. Crews were called at 12.30am yesterday.

POLICE are looking for a motorbike stolen from Rushdale Road, Meersbrook, Sheffield, on Friday morning last week. Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.

A BOILER was stolen from an unoccupied property on Ironside Road, Gleadless Valley, Sheffield, last week. Police are investigating.

A VAUXHALL Corsa found burning on Doncaster Road, Mexborough, had been set alight deliberately at 8.50pm on Tuesday.
