NEWS IN BRIEF: Shovel used to fight Sheffield grass fire

FIREFIGHTERS called to a grass fire off Longstone Crescent, Frecheville, Sheffield, found a member of the public beating out the flames with a shovel.

The fire, reported at 8pm on Sunday, had been started deliberately.

Canal rescue

A MAN was rescued from the canal in Sheffield at 4am on Saturday. He had fallen into the water at Lockhouse Walk, Darnall. Fire crews from Dearne, Darnall and Aston Park pulled the man out and he was taken to hospital.

Pan left on hob

FIREFIGHTERS broke into a house on Exeter Drive, Broomhall, Sheffield, after neighbours reported the smell of smoke. Crews smashed their way through a door and found a pan had been left on the hob at 7pm on Sunday.

Bedroom fire

A FIRE broke out in a bedroom on Jenkin Road, Wincobank, Sheffield, after a curtain touched an electric lamp.
