NEWS IN BRIEF: Police probe baby graves damage

POLICE are investigating damage to babies’ graves at Shiregreen Cemetery.

Officers were alerted after a woman visiting her baby daughter’s grave found a smashed base, and ornaments and solar lights missing, on Friday.

Inspector Simon Leake, of Sheffield’s North East Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “I’ll get my staff to speak to the cemetery staff and other parks staff to ensure we are more vigilant and hopefully catch whoever is doing this.”

Metal theft arrests

A TWO day police crackdown on metal thefts in Sheffield led to seven arrests, including four over the theft of metal railings on Raeburn Road, Gleadless Valley. Meanwhile a house on Sands Close, Gleadless Valley, Sheffield, was burgled between Sunday and Tuesday last week.

Bike reward offered

A REWARD is being offered for information leading to the safe retrieval of a stolen motorbike. The BMW Dakar, registration Y376 JGX, was stolen from Hillsborough between 8pm last Tuesday and 12noon on Wednesday. Call police on 101.

FIREFIGHTERS spent an hour and a half dealing with a blaze at a derelict former factory in Sheffield. The fire on Finchwell Close, Handsworth, broke out at 6.40am on Saturday. Three fire engines were sent to the scene.
