NEWS IN BRIEF: Fleeing burglar jumps in river

A BURGLAR jumped into the River Sheaf while trying to escape from police after officers chased him following a burglary on Saxon Road, Heeley, Sheffield. He was spotted and arrested on Sunday night.

Meanwhile police investigating two burglaries in Lowedges, Sheffield, made two arrests on Wednesday night - with one suspect caught after he was chased from a stolen vehicle.

POLICE in Sheffield want to hear from anyone with information about outdoor music events planned for woodland areas around Grenoside. A spokesman for the Northern Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Our team is looking to prevent any events that may cause noise and other nuisance to residents.”

MOTORISTS are warned of delays on the M1 between junctions 34 and 35 this weekend. Two lanes north and southbound will be closed between 8pm on Sunday and 6am on Monday. The A1(M) at Blyth will also be affected with the southbound carriageway closed between 8pm on Monday and 6am on Tuesday.

PIPEWORK was stolen from an outside toilet on St Ronan’s Road, Sharrow, Sheffield, overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday. Police are investigating.
