NEWS IN BRIEF: Bin chute on fire outside flats

FIRE crews dealt with a bin chute on fire outside a block of flats on Exeter Drive, Broomhall, Sheffield. None of the residents needed to be evacuated while firefighters dealt with the incident at 11.30pm on Wednesday.

Blaze at old shop

FIRE crews were called out to a derelict shop in the process of being refurbished after a cement mixer and timber caught fire. The incident on Richard Road, Smithies, Barnsley, was reported at 7pm on Wednesday. The cause is unknown.

Gas blast fears

FIREFIGHTERS had to cool down gas cylinders found near a burning bin in Barnsley, for fear that they could explode. They were discovered by crews called out to a bin blaze on Outgang Lane, Laughton Commons, Rotherham, at 7.30pm on Wednesday. The blaze was accidental.

Rubbish in flames

THE disused Blenheim House building on Doncaster Road, Rotherham town centre, went up in flames when a pile of rubbish was set alight. The flames spread to floorboards. Firefighters were called at 8.30pm on Wednesday.

Scaffolding stolen

THIEVES cut down six trees to get into an industrial unit in Barlborough through fields at the rear. They broke into City Scaffolding, Chesterfield Road, and stole aluminium scaffolding poles and aluminium and steel ladders between April 20 and 23.

Cooker concern

FIREFIGHTERS were called out to a cooker fire at Manse Farm Mews, Cudworth, Barnsley, on Wednesday night. All the occupants were out and nobody was harmed.

Alert at station

THE door to the former ticket office at Elsecar station, Hill Street, Elsecar, went up in flames after a sign on the outside was set alight. It was reported to the fire service at 7.25pm on Wednesday.

Arson attackers

A PILE of straw used for animals was set alight in an underpass underneath the Dearne Valley Parkway, Hoyland. The arson attack was reported to firefighters at 10.15pm on Wednesday.
