New powers for police to confiscate alcohol in north Derbyshire town

Police in Shirebrook have the power to confiscate alcohol from anyone found drinking in public.

Bolsover District Council has introduced a Designated Public Place Order following a spate of complaints about alcohol fulled anti-social behaviour including harassment and intimidation.

The order makes it an offence to refuse to comply with a police request to stop drinking.

Councillor Brian Murray-Carr, Bolsover District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “It is important to realise that this Order is not a drinking ban. It gives us greater powers to deal with situations involving either individuals or groups and drink, which could then escalate and cause more problems in the community.”

The order is supported by Derbyshire Police and Shirebrook Town Council.

Signs are displayed throughout the town.
