Kerry, aged 47, said it must be ‘horrific and heartbreaking’ for Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, to be told by German prosecutors that they have a suspect in custody and believe their daughter to be dead.

Madeleine was three years-old when she vanished from an apartment on a holiday complex in Portugal while her parents were dining with friends at a nearby restaurant in May 2007.

In an interview with ITV, Kerry, from Sheffield, said: “I can't imagine what they are going through - it is horrific and heartbreaking.

“If this comes to a conclusion at least they know justice has been served and someone will be punished - that may be some consolation to them.”

Kerry’s son, Ben, was 21 months old when he vanished on the Greek island of Kos in July 1991.

He was playing outside a farmhouse his grandparents were renovating after the couple moved to the island for a new life.

In October 2016, South Yorkshire Police announced that detectives believed Ben died as a result of an accident near to where he was last seen alive.

After investigating a number of theories, the force said it was the belief of detectives that Ben was struck by a digger clearing land close to where the toddler vanished.

Excavation work has been carried out on the island but Ben’s remains have never been found.

The digger driver died in 2015.
