Mum of Harvey Willgoose calls for tackling knife crime to be South Yorkshire Police's top priority

The mum of Sheffield murder victim Harvey Willgoose believes tackling knife crime should be South Yorkshire Police’s top priority.

Her 15-year-old son died after he was stabbed by a fellow pupil at All Saints Catholic High School on February 3, 2025.

Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of the tragedy.

Harvey’s killer – Mohammed ‘Umar’ Khan – was 15 at the time of the stabbing.

He is 16 now and is serving a 16 year sentence after being convicted of murder following a trial.

During his trial, it emerged he was able to bring a knife into school grounds on one occasion prior to Harvey’s death.

A picture taken from Khan’s phone, showing him posing with the blade, was shown to jurors.

Less than two months before Harvey’s death, Khan’s mum contacted the school to say that she had found an axe in his bag.

The school contacted South Yorkshire Police and an officer spoke to Khan about “the dangers of carrying weapons”.

Khan told jurors that he bought the axe from a fellow pupil, whilst on school premises.

Harvey’s mum, Caroline Willgoose, has spent the last year campaigning for knife arches to be installed in schools.

The Star recently asked readers to state what issues they believe their local police force should be tackling as a priority.

Many called for increased police patrols to help make city streets safer.

A number of others also raised concerns about feeling unsafe in the city centre.

With a plan mooted for police forces to merge with neighbouring forces, some readers expresssed concerns that policing priorities may change.

Harvey’s mum was one of our readers to suggest what issues South Yorkshire Police should be concentrating on tackling.

See some of the most common issues raised and what readers said:
