MPs object to proposal to close courts in Rotherham

Rotherham MPs have written to the Justice Secretary on proposals to close Rotherham Magistrates’ Court.

Sarah Champion, Kevin Barron and John Healey contacted Michael Gove in objection to proposals that would see the closure of Rotherham Magistrates’ Court, County Court and Family Court, with the services largely transferred to Sheffield.

They said the closure would undermine the principle of local justice and increase travelling times for victims and witnesses.

Their letter said: “By closing the Court, the Ministry of Justice would undermine the principle of local justice, delivered locally, which is at the heart of the British justice system.”

“Confidence in the justice system in Rotherham has been sorely tested in recent years.”
