Motorist drove at man who visited his partner and their toddler while high on crack-cocaine

A motorist has been caged after he purposefully drove at a man who had visited his partner and left her terrified.

Sheffield Crown Court heard on June 16 how Josh Roddis, aged 26, of Trenchard Close, Grimethorpe, Barnsley, drove towards the complainant after he learned that the man had visited his home and terrified his partner.

Eddison Flint, prosecuting, said the complainant had been with friends in Grimethorpe and they had been drunk and had taken crack-cocaine and this man wrongly assumed Roddis was linked to drugs and he attended the defendant’s home where his partner and child were present.

Mr Flint added that when the complainant was walking back to his grandfather’s nearby home Roddis appeared in a car and mounted a pavement and drove ar the complainant who suffered a leg injury as he managed to get out of the way.

Judge David Dixon said: “What happened when you arrived at the scene was an instinctive heat of the moment lapse of judgement.”

He added: “It was because of what you perceived was being done to your partner.”

The court heard the complainant suffered an ankle injury after the incident on March 13 and he needed a skin graft which has healed well.

Roddis, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to a section 18 assault of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Timothy Savage, defending, said Roddis has made efforts to put his past behind him including leaving a gang which has taken courage.

Mr Savage added: “He has extracted himself from a local gang and that is no mean feat and that takes significant courage.”

He said Roddis moved home to protect his partner and their 16-month-old daughter and his partner had phoned him in absolute panic and terror when the complainant had visited their home.

Judge Dixon told Roddis: “To your great credit you managed to break away from problems in your past but that past still haunts you.”

He sentenced Roddis to 32 months of custody and disqualified him from driving for two years and four months.
