DETECTIVES investigating a sexual assault in Sheffield have arrested two men on suspicion of rape.
The men have been quizzed by police and bailed pending further inquiries over an allegation made by a 41-year-old local woman who reported an attack on wasteland off Greenland Way between 2.45am and 3.45am on Sunday, January 30.
Police disclosed the progress made with their investigation at a public meeting in Darnall, which was sparked by community concerns over crime in the area.
It was a follow-up meeting to an event last month where residents were up in arms over incidents and behaviour in the suburb, which some branded “a no-go area”.
Inspector Paul Ferguson, of the police Safer Neighbourhood Team which covers Darnall, said officers had been asked to step up patrols in the area since the first meeting.
He said: “We are a small pool of staff, it’s a fact. We are not going to get an influx of staff – that’s not the climate we are in.
“What we can do and have done is focus people into the areas of greatest need.”
Police, councillors and members of the public have agreed to have regular meetings to help set policing priorities.
