FOUR masked raiders armed with a wooden battering ram are being hunted by police today after a terrifying attempted robbery at a Sheffield jeweller’s shop.
The thugs tried to burst in through the back of the Shumile Jewellers on Abbeydale Road at around 5.55pm on Tuesday, as staff inside were preparing to close the shop for the day.
While the workers inside frantically dialled 999, the would-be robbers used the wooden battering ram to try to smash their way into the shop through a rear ground floor window.
The men were unable to break in, and eventually fled in a getaway car.
The shop’s owner, Haider Chishty, and his wife were able to call the police.
“We were just putting the stock away from the day when I saw them on the CCTV from inside the shop,” Mr Chishty told The Star.
“I shouted to my wife who was upstairs to call the police, and I shouted out of the window for help.
“People who were passing by in the streets then called the police too.”
Anyone with any information about the raid, or who believes they may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area, is urged to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 832 of February 26.
Alternatively, people can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
