Man's body discovered at block of flats raided by police this week

Police have discovered the body of an 84-year-old man at a block of flats where a gun was found earlier this week.

Officers were called to Cliff Block, Deer Park View, Stannington at around 12.25pm on Thursday (10 September) after they received a request for a welfare check on a man in the 15-storey building.

The 84-year-old was sadly found deceased when police arrived. His death is not believed to be suspicious.

On Monday armed police swarmed the building as part of Operation Fortify – South Yorkshire's multi-agency approach to dealing with serious violent crime and organised criminality. A 36-year-old man, Wayne Parkin, was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with four firearms offences.

While at the property, officers were alerted to the possibility there could be harmful materials inside and residents in the immediate area were evacuated as a precautionary measure. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue and the Army’s bomb squad also assisted with the operation.
