Man taken to hospital after 'massive' fire at Sheffield coal yard

A ‘massive’ fire at a Sheffield coal yard left one man hospitalised with smoke inhalation.

Plumes of black smoke could be seen coming from the blaze on Penthorpe Close, Intake on Friday morning. A South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue spokesperson confirmed two crews were called to the fire just after 10.10am. On arrival firefighters found a box van and rubbish on fire. Crews from Birley and Parkway used a hose reel to extinguish the flames. They have since left the scene.

One man was hospitalised with “slight smoke inhalation,” the spokesperson added. An ambulance also attended the scene to transport him to hospital.

One woman said she could see the smoke from her home one mile away. She said: “I’m on Jaunty Road and its massive from here, looks really bad.”
