Martin Rigg, aged 37, of Plover Court, Skye Edge, Sheffield, suffered severe head injuries when he was struck by a tram on West Street in May last year.

He died in hospital four days later.

An inquest into his death heard that he was involved in an ‘altercation’ with two men shortly after he withdrew £10 from a cash machine.

The men, brothers Dane Whiteley and Luke Whiteley, were arrested on suspicion of murder and later released while police enquiries continued, but both have since died.

CCTV footage showed that Dane Whiteley ‘lunged’ for Mr Rigg’s pocket, causing the steelworker to step backwards into the path of an oncoming tram.

As Mr Rigg lay dying, Dane stole the £10.

Dane was found hanged in his prison cell the month after the incident while in custody for another offence.
