Man jumped to safety from smoke-filled South Yorkshire flat

A man jumped from the first floor of a block of flats after an arson attack filled the building with smoke.

The man, in his 30s, was lying on the ground when emergency services arrived but paramedics checked him over and he was unhurt.

A woman from the flat managed to get out down the communal stairs but he was beaten back by the fumes and jumped to safety.

The fire on Hirst Gate, Mexborough, was discovered at 12.15am yesterday and had been started deliberately in the bin store.

Police are aware of the incident.

Firefighters were also called out to deal with a wheelie bin set alight on Cloughfields Road, Hoyland, Barnsley.

The blaze was discovered at 2.30am yesterday.
