The court heard how Hinshelwood had been out drinking in Sheffield. He then travelled to the Whiston area of Rotherham, where he was living at the time, and raped a 37-year-old woman.

The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, immediately reported the rape to police and an investigation was launched. Hinshelwood was identified and arrested later the same day.

Detective Constable Carly Booth said: “The victim in this case has shown remarkable courage in coming forward to report this awful crime, as well as a tremendous amount of dignity and patience as we have progressed the criminal investigation and brought the case before the courts.

“Hinshelwood refused to admit his crime, forcing the victim to relive her terrifying ordeal before a jury. It is testament to her strength and bravery that she was able to face her abuser in court and give powerful evidence.

“I am pleased Hinshelwood is behind bars and I hope the victim is able to take some closure from this court hearing, knowing that the person who committed this horrific crime has been found guilty and is in prison.”

Hinshelwood will also be placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.
