A dangerous driver who drove a car at a police officer in Sheffield has been jailed.

Aidan Hinkler, aged 21, knocked over the police officer after reversing into him at speed on Kilvington Road, Woodthorpe on Thursday, November 27, last year.

Sheffield Crown Court heard that the officer had been on patrol in the area and approached Hinkler because he had suspicions regarding the Ford Fiesta he was sat in near his home.

Hinkler stalled the car, before restarting it, reversing at speed and mounting a footpath.

The court heard Hinkler ignored the officer when he shouted at him to stop and continued to drive towards him at speed.

The car hit the officer, knocking him off balance and causing minor injuries and Hinkler sped off down the road.

Hinkler, of Kilvington Road, was later arrested and charged with dangerous driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

He pleaded guilty to all three charges at Sheffield Crown Court and was jailed for 14 months.

Police Constable Ryan Griffiths said Hinkler did not think about his actions, which could have killed the officer.

He said: “Fortunately the officer only sustained minor injuries, however Hinkler didn’t spare a thought for the potential consequences, which could have proved fatal, as he recklessly drove at him.

“I sincerely hope he considers his thoughtless and dangerous actions that day while serving his sentence in prison.”
