Insurance broker Elliot Wright, aged 21, was left with a black eye after an alleged altercation involving Blades forward, McBurnie, 24, which was captured on a mobile phone.

During the fracas, a man is seen stamping on a phone, which continued to record images and audio.

A 24-year-old man was arrested over the incident in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, last Saturday and was later bailed pending further enquiries.

He spent a night in police custody.

In response, Mr Elliot has released a statement on Twitter, in which he says: “On Saturday 10th May, I became involved in an incident which involved a number of parties, one of which was Oliver McBurnie.

“I am sure we all regret the incident.

"We exchanged opinions at the time and as far as I am concerned the matter is concluded. I do not intend to take any further action.

“I wish Oliver all the best going forward. After the year we’ve all had, it’s time to look to the future and not the past.

“I will not be making any further public comment.”

McBurnie, a £20,000-a-week striker, is a capped Scottish international.

He signed for Sheffield United for £20 million in 2019 when the team was promoted to the Premier League.

McBurnie is currently out injured after suffering a stress fracture in United’s 3-0 defeat to Arsenal last month.

Detectives investigating the incident have issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward.
