He spent a night in police custody.

In response, Mr Elliot has released a statement on Twitter, in which he says: “On Saturday 10th May, I became involved in an incident which involved a number of parties, one of which was Oliver McBurnie.

“I am sure we all regret the incident.

"We exchanged opinions at the time and as far as I am concerned the matter is concluded. I do not intend to take any further action.

“I wish Oliver all the best going forward. After the year we’ve all had, it’s time to look to the future and not the past.

“I will not be making any further public comment.”

McBurnie, a £20,000-a-week striker, is a capped Scottish international.

He signed for Sheffield United for £20 million in 2019 when the team was promoted to the Premier League.

McBurnie is currently out injured after suffering a stress fracture in United’s 3-0 defeat to Arsenal last month.

Detectives investigating the incident have issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward.
