Police have issued a CCTV image of a man wanted after another man was threatened with a machete as he was chased along a Rotherham street.

Officers were called in to investigate after a 22-year-old man was chased by an armed gang as he was getting into a taxi with friends near to the William Fryer pub in Wellgate, Rotherham town centre.

The 22-year-old victim and his friends escaped the incident, at 12.40am on Sunday, August 23, unharmed.

Sergeant Denis Plaistow, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “We are grateful for the public’s continued support as we carry out our enquiries into this incident and would like to reassure the community that we are taking this incredibly seriously.

“We know that images have previously been shared on social media but we must be sure that our investigation is not jeopardised by releasing certain information too soon, which is why we are only releasing further details now.

“We believe the man pictured could help us with our enquiries and we’d like to hear from him directly or from anyone who may know who he is.”

“Our officers have carried out a comprehensive investigation so far and there is some suggestion that there was an altercation near to the William Fry pub in Wellgate prior to the reported affray, which may or may not be linked.

“I’d therefore like to hear from anyone who may have seen the earlier incident or witnessed suspicious activity in that part of town.”

A 17-year-old boy remains on police bail after being arrested on suspicion of affray last month.

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
