Man 'dragged wife of 45 years across carpet by broken ankle', Sheffield court hears

Peter Jordan's wife spent six nights in hospital and was given a wheelchair, following the attack in March, last year, but less than a month later he attacked her again, tipping her out of the chair, then punching her and pulling her hair.

He received a 12 month sentence, suspended for two years, for wounding with intent to cause GBH and assault by beating, on January 27 this year, said prosecutor Katy Varlow.

A five year restraining order was imposed, banning him from all contact with her, Sheffield Crown Court heard on Thursday.

Jordan rang his wife on February 12, and she put the phone down.

When he was arrested Jordan called his wife obscene names. A note was found on him which said: "I will never do anything like this again if only I am given another chance."

The court heard Jordan was convicted of battery in 2017, after he punched his wife in the mouth and was aggressive to hotel staff during a holiday in Whitby, in November 2016.

In 2019, he was convicted again, this time for bending her fingers back and kicking her shin while they were in a pub, in 2017.

"His wife describes the marriage as perfectly fine until six years ago when he started to become aggressive," said Ms Varlow.

"She believes it was as a result of him drinking after he was made redundant."

In a statement, his wife said she is "very frightened of Peter" and “scared that now he is back in Rotherham he will contact her.”

James Gould, mitigating, said it was a "difficult and complex case" because there were signs that Jordan could be in the early stages of dementia.

"He does accept the marriage will not be rekindled and he needs to understand that very quickly," he said.

"It goes without saying that custody for somebody of 66 years of age with chronic health problems is particularly difficult.

"The family are there to help him upon his release. He knows the effect of any breach."

Jordan, of Moorgate Road, Moorgate, Rotherham, pleaded guilty to breaching a suspended sentence and two counts of harassment, when he appeared at Sheffield Magistrates Court, on February 14.

Judge Peter Kelson QC told him: "In the first month you breached that order by leaving a voicemail and making a call.

“I am satisfied that you don't seek or require the help of the probation service. I am aware of the impact of custody upon you.

"I have no hesitation in imposing the suspended sentence in full. You must not under any circumstances contact this lady.”

Jordan, who has already served the equivalent of a 14 month sentence, received 16 months in prison, and the restraining order remains in place.
