Man critically injured in Sheffield shooting which happened during broad daylight

A man is critically injured in hospital after being shot in the chest on a major Sheffield street in broad daylight.

Emergency services were called to Grimesthorpe Road in Burngreave yesterday, Thursday, April 16, at about 2.30pm following reports of a shooting.

They found a 21-year-old man with injuries to his chest which police said were ‘consistent with a shooting’.

He was taken to hospital, where police said this morning he remains in a critical condition.

South Yorkshire Police said the shooting was being treated as a ‘targeted attack’.

A spokeswoman for the force said seven men who were detained at the scene had since been released with no further action to be taken.

Detective Inspector Ben Wood said: “Our enquiries are progressing at speed and we are appealing for anyone who saw what happened yesterday afternoon, or has any information about the incident, to contact us.

“You will see our officers carrying out enhanced patrols in the area today and over the coming days as we continue our investigations into what happened. Those officers are there for your reassurance and to support the community following a distressing incident.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 421 of April 16.
