Man charged with armed robbery of city shop

Detectives investigating an armed robbery at a Sheffield convenience store have charged a suspect.

Ajmal Khan, aged 29, of Wensley Street, Grimesthorpe, has been charged with robbery and possessing a firearm with intent at the Sandstone Convenience Store, Sandstone Road, Wincobank, on Monday night.

Owner Balasingham Sujanthani, 32, and a friend, 34, who was helping out, was cashing up when a man with a gun burst into his store.

The terrified businessman said a gunman stood in the shop doorway with the weapon pointing at him, while another man ran behind the counter and raided the till.

Khan appeared at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court charged with yesterday and was remanded in custody.
