A man appeared at court yesterday charged with wounding following a shooting in Sheffield over the Bank Holiday weekend which left a man fighting for life.

Russell Fairchild, aged 47, of Handsworth Grange Road, Handsworth, was remanded in custody by Sheffield magistrates and will appear at Sheffield Crown Court next week.

He was arrested after officers were called to his house on Sunday night to find a man with life-threatening head injuries.

They removed an air rifle from the scene, and an armed officer from South Yorkshire Police tweeted that the incident may have been the result of an ‘accidental discharge’.

Another man, aged 23, who was also arrested over the shooting and quizzed over the weekend, has since been released without charge.

The shooting victim was still in a critical condition at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital yesterday.

Detectives investigating the incident spent the weekend at the house where the shooting took place.

They carried out door-to-door inquiries looking for anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious.

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
