Sheffield Crown Court heard on June 22 how Zeinaden Mahamad, aged 25, of no fixed abode, admitted possessing heroin with intent to supply and possessing cocaine with intent to supply.

Nicoletta Alistari, prosecuting, said Mahamad had been in Sheffield city centre with another man but they had separated and ran off after they noticed CCTV cameras were turned their way.

Ms Alistari said officers followed Mahamad into a barber’s shop and they seized 60 wraps of heroin and cocaine from the defendant with a street value of £465.

Mahamad has a previous conviction for possessing cannabis with intent to supply, according to Ms Alistari, and he had been given a community penalty with unpaid work for this matter which he breached by committing his latest drug offences.

The court heard Mahamad pleaded guilty on the basis the drugs did not belong to him, and they had been forced upon him by others, and he had not been involved in their proposed sale.

Judge Michael Slater sentenced Mahamad, who has been remanded in custody for eight months, to 12-months of custody and ordered him to pay £256 costs.

Andrew Smith, defending, said Mahamad’s immigration status is such that he has no right to remain in the UK which will be addressed upon his imminent release from prison.

Mr Smith added Mahamad says he is from Iraq but the Home Office believes he is from Iran.
