A man was arrested under The Poisons Act after police swarmed a quiet Sheffield street on Friday morning.

Residents on Taplin Road in Hillsborough reported seeing up to three riot vans on the street at about 8.15am and a man being led out of a house by officers following a raid.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “An arrest warrant was conducted at a property on Taplin Road in Hillsborough today, 20 November.

"A 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of an offence under The Poisons Act 1972. He remains in police custody.”

Police remained at the scene all morning with three marked vehicles, including two riot vans, parked on the road. Four officers were seen removing five boxes from the house, as well as an evidence bag, at about 11.15am.

The Police spokesperson added: “There is no risk to residents in the area and a cordon that was in place has now been lifted.”

Residents The Star spoke to on Friday morning were unaware of any potential danger to them.

Mitchell Dungworth, a mechanic who lives on Taplin Road, said: “There were two, maybe three riot vans at 8.55am going in and out.”

Another neighbour said: “I’m going berserk. Who knows what’s happened? The police have been there for so long.

"It’s fine around here. It’s a woman in her 80s who lives there with her two sons. She’s just a lovely little woman.”

Another neighbour added: “All I know is he’s been arrested, as for what I don’t know.”
