South Yorkshire Police said he was an innocent bystander caught up in a feud between two rival gangs.

The intended target is believed to have been in the Arbourthorne area when the gun was fired, but the young boy was mistakenly hit.

He was taken to hospital and underwent surgery.

Yesterday the youngster was described as stable.
