A 47-year-old man is in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of threats to kill, robbery and knife possession on a Sheffield street.

Officers were called to Abbeyfield Road in Burngreave at around 11pm on Tuesday (11 August) following reports of a man carrying a knife.

A 47-year-old man was detained at the scene and arrested on suspicion of threats to kill, robbery and possession of a bladed article. He remained in custody as of Wednesday.

The incident was witnessed by several members of the public, whom the police praised for their conduct.

District commander for Sheffield, chief superintendent Una Jennings, said: “Officers on the scene have described the actions of the men and women who saw this unfold on their street as extremely helpful.

“They stayed calm and helped prevent any escalation of what could have been a very different incident."
