A man inside the car was searched and a quantity of suspected cannabis was recovered.

"The individual is then believed to have run from officers, before being arrested on Plymouth Road on suspicion of possession of a Class B drug, driving without insurance and drug driving,” added a spokeswoman for the force.

"He has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.”

One witness described seeing more than half a dozen police cars and vans involved in the pursuit, during which he said a man had run into one of the passages between the houses on Abbeydale Road before being caught.
