A man and woman arrested over a baby death in South Yorkshire remain on police bail.

They were arrested over the death of a four-month-baby girl from Athersley, Barnsley, who was taken to hospital with ‘catastrophic injuries’ on May 16, 2020 and never recovered.

South Yorkshire Police said the baby’s life support was withdrawn on Monday, September 14.

A 31-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man, both from Athersley, were arrested on suspicion of murder and later bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Etheridge, the senior investigating officer, said at the time of their arrest that the baby was two days old when she suffered the injuries which resulted in her death.

He said there was a ‘dedicated team of officers’ assigned to the investigation.

Anyone with information about the case should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote incident number 207 of September 16.
