Man, 24, arrested ahead of police raid at home of former Sheffield councillor

A man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm hours before a police raid on the home of a former Sheffield councillor.

South Yorkshire Police say a 24-year-old man was arrested ahead of a police raid yesterday.

Officers swooped on the property in Edgedale Road, Nether Edge yesterday afternoon as part of the investigation. The property was also shot at last year.

Ex-councillor Mohammad Maroof and his family lived at the property when a gunman opened fire at it in April last year - one of four incidents linked by detectives.

When The Star visited the scene yesterday afternoon, our reporter was told that Mr Maroof and his family still live at the house.

A SYP spokesman said: “Last night there was an increased police presence in the London Road / Abbeydale Road area of Sheffield as officers conducted enquiries following the arrest of a Sheffield man.

"This work forms part of the ongoing disruption activity following recent incidents in the area.

"A 24 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm on 5 August.

"We would like to reassure local residents that officers’ presence will continue as our investigation progresses.

The street was the scene of huge police activity yesterday with officers searching the house and garden.
