Man, 20, shot dead on Sheffield street as second murder probe launched in 24 hours

Detectives have launched a second murder probe in Sheffield the space of 24 hours after a man was shot dead.

The 20-year-old, who has not yet been named, was killed in a shooting on Grimesthorpe Road South, Burngreave, in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services were alerted to the gun attack at around 1am but the victim could not be saved.

A large police cordon is in place on and around Grimesthorpe Road South while officers piece together the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Crime scene investigation officers have also been deployed.

No arrests have yet been made.

South Yorkshire Police said: “Shortly after 1am, police were alerted to a shooting by Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

“A call had been made reporting that a man had been shot inside a property in Grimesthorpe Road South. By the time ambulance crews arrived, he had already been transported to hospital.

“The 20-year-old sadly died from his injuries shortly after arriving at Northern General.

“The investigation is in its early stages but at this stage, it is believed to be a targeted attack.

“We are asking anyone with any information about the man’s death, to contact police.

Senior investigating officer, DCI Mark Oughton said: “Cordons remain in place in the area today while officers conduct their enquiries, including thorough scene searches and an intensive trawl of CCTV footage.

“Extra officers will be patrolling the area today to provide further reassurance and anyone with concerns should speak to one of our officers.”

The shooting came just 24 hours after another murder in Sheffield.

In the early hours of yesterday, a 28-year-old man was found critically injured on Club Garden Road on the Lansdowne estate in Highfield.

He was taken to hospital but could not be saved and was pronounced dead a short time later.

A 30-year-old man arrested on suspicion of that murder remains in police custody this afternoon.
