Knife man chased victim through Sheffield street threatening to stab him

Sheffield Crown Court heard on January 18 how Joe Kevin Light, aged 27, of Kingswood Avenue, Laughton, Sheffield, was captured on CCTV with a carving knife as he chased and threatened a friend on Kingswood Avenue.

Ryan Donoghue, prosecuting, said: “A call was made to police by a member of the public that the defendant was out in the street chasing another man with a knife.”

Police attended Light’s home and the defendant was shouting and swearing and he confirmed he had been in the street arguing but he initially denied having a weapon, according to Mr Donoghue.

Sheffield Crown Court, pictured, heard how a knife-wielding thug has been jailed after he chased and threatened a man in the street. Also pictured is an example of a knife and not the weapon used by the offender.

But Mr Donghue said CCTV footage from a neighbour’s property showed there had been an argument and Light had a large carving knife and he had chased the victim while swearing and threatening to stab him.

The footage also recorded the two men arguing as they moved out of shot and the CCTV showed Light returning into view still holding the knife and arguing as the victim drove away in a van.

The defendant initially claimed he had been holding a brush but later admitted to police he had been arguing with a friend outside his address but the threats he made were not intended to be serious.

Light, who has previous convictions, admitted possessing and threatening a person with a bladed article after the incident about 3.20am, on December 13, 2020.

Richard Barradell, defending, said Light suffers with ADHD and serious learning difficulties and he has a low tolerance to stress and acts impulsively.

The victim had been a friend of the defendant’s and there was just the threat of violence during the argument and no actual violence, according to Mr Barradell.

Mr Barradell added: “He’s just a simple lad and he’s very sorry for what he did.”

Judge Rachael Harrison told Light: “You were caught on CCTV chasing a man you know shouting, ‘I will f*****g stab you’, while carrying a large carving knife and you lied about it repeatedly.”

Judge Harrison sentenced Light to eight months of custody.
