A man who murdered his flatmate after being released from a psychiatric unit in Sheffield has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Ahmed Ali, aged 39, had been receiving treatment at the Michael Carlisle Centre in Nether Edge after being admitted in 2008 over a paranoid belief that people were trying to kill him.

His treatment finished in March 31, 2009, and Ali went to live with flatmate Abdullah Barre Jama, 45, in Blackheath, South East London.

One month later he repeatedly stabbed Mr Jama in the head, neck and arms.

Ali denied murder but admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

He has been detained at Wathwood Hospital, Rotherham, under the Mental Health Act.
