“The defendant’s behaviour terrified her.”

Ms Hollis added the complainant laid down for protection and Porter kicked her legs and as she climbed on a sofa the defendant pulled her back and pinned her down and put the jagged edge of a broken broom handle to her mouth causing a cut.

Ms Hollis added as the complainant ran Porter returned from the kitchen and banged her head against a wall and dragged her back and poured water over her head and spat in her face.

Porter also took a bottle of bleach and as she escaped she felt liquid splashing the back of her legs.

Porter, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm after the attack in January.

He also admitted two counts of assaulting an emergency worker after an incident involving two police officers outside a pub in October.

Amy Earnshaw, defending, said Porter has had a difficult up-bringing and has mental health issues and he is remorseful for his actions.

Judge Jeremy Richardson QC told Porter: “You sought to humiliate, terrify and injure your former partner. Your conduct taken together reveals you to be a man of violence.”

Porter was sentenced to two-and-a-half years of custody with a five-year restraining order.
